What is VAULTING?
If
you like gymnastics .... If you enjoy dance... If you can't get enough of
horses... Then this is the equestrian sport for you!
Vaulting is an
equestrian sport, recognised by the Federation Equestrian International ‘FEI’
and is most easily described as the sport of gymnastics on the back of a moving
horse.
Vaulting is relatively new to Canada, but it is actually one of the original equestrian disciplines, dating back to the Roman era when mounted soldiers performed maneuvers such as these in full battle armor.
As our means of warfare became more sophisticated, gymnastics moved off the battlefield and into the gymnasium.
Equestrian vaulting was reintroduced as a sport in its own right around the middle of this century. It is ranked as one of the fastest growing youth sports in Europe and it is rapidly gaining a foothold in North America as well. In Canada, there is a growing number of active vaulting teams, and a number of summer camps offering vaulting as part of their program.
Vaulters learn to move in
harmony with their four-legged partner while performing many of the exciting
exercises familiar to gymnasts and dancers.
It is further the most natural
and playful means of acquainting children with the horse. Children learn
balance, develop strength and learn to cooperate with the horse. While improving
their skill level they develop confidence and a healthy sense of self-esteem.
Vaulting promotes excellent balance, coordination, love and respect for your
horse. For those of us who ride also, it develops a strong seat and position,
which is essential for riders of all levels. Team work and trust is fostered
through team vaulting, and we also learn about horse care with much less cost!
This is what makes our sport special!
